The Spring Picnic is May 20!

Please join us for our Spring Parish Picnic on Sunday, May 20 after the 10:30 a.m. service. We’ll continue the tradition of fried chicken from Michie Tavern. We ask that families whose last names begin with A-F to bring a dessert and G-Z a side dish (salad, vegetable). Please remember to bring a serving spoon if needed. Please drop off your food in the parish hall the morning of the 20th.

Men’s Group Meets May 23

The Men’s Group will meet on Wednesday, May 23 at 7:00 p.m. in Neve Hall. Join us as fellow parishioner Jim Greene talks about his career in international relations. His recent visit to the Ukraine, the political situation there and its implications for Russia and NATO will be the focus of his presentation. Newcomers are welcome!

Invitation for New Lay Readers

The ministry of reading and praying in church is an ancient and important role for members of the congregation. We are expanding the opportunities to read and lead prayers during our 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. worship services, and therefore are renewing the invitation to become a lay reader. In addition to reading the lessons, there will be opportunities to lead the Psalm at the 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. services as well as the opportunity to read the Prayers of the People at the 8:30 (BCP pages 329-330) and 10:30 a.m. services. Conversations with the Rector

Beginning June 3 and every Sunday during the summer we will offer an opportunity for dialog during the education hour, 9:30-10:20 a.m. Some of these weeks will be a teaching from Rev. Eric about the Bible, theology, or current events in the church. Some weeks will be open for conversation about what is on your mind, questions of faith, the church or St. Paul’s. June 17th during the Shrine Mont parish retreat, the Rev. Jane Sigloh will continue that conversation. If you have specific topics you hope will be covered over the summer, please be in communication with Rev. Eric. (The nursery will be available as well as supervised care on the playground for children age 4-12 during this time each week.)

Soup Kitchen Day is May 29

St. Paul’s, Ivy is participating in th Soup Kitchen on Tuesday, May 29. We would love to have at least 10 volunteers to help serve food to our guests during lunchtime. We also need food donations. If you can help, please contact Heather Dickey or Fran Cannon – and thank you for your support!

We will need donations of these items!

12 Stouffer’s party-size meat lasagnas
100 hot dogs and buns
4 loaves of sandwich bread
peanut butter and jelly
3 XL bags of small carrots
12+ loaves of Italian bread (not garlic-flavored)
2 XL containers of lemonade
4 gallons of 2% milk
10-12 bags/boxes of cookies

School Supplies for Nzali

Please consider donating school supplies for the Nzali Primary School. Any of the following would be greatly appreciated and may be dropped of at the church office or in the box marked “Nzali School Supplies” in the parish hall.

Pencils
Erasers
Boxes of 24 crayons
Composition books
Packs of colored paper
Colorful stickers

Monetary donations would also be very helpful! These will be used for blackboard paint, brushes, soccer balls, maps, flash cards and other needs we may discover upon arrival in Nzali.

Thank you for supporting the education efforts of this year’s mission participants.

From the welcome cookout on Friday evening to Sunday Eucharist in the open-air Shrine, experience the magic of this special “place apart.” Activities are planned for all ages and are completely optional if you prefer to hike, fish, nap, or sit on the porch with a good book. Welcome New Organist/Choir Director Daniel Brinson Beginning June 20

I am pleased to announce that Daniel Brinson will join the St. Paul’s staff mid-June. Daniel comes to us from R. E. Lee Memorial Parish in Lexington, VA where he has served as the Director of Music for the last ten years. Daniel holds a Bachelor’s of Music in organ performance from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and a Master’s of Music in organ performance from Yale. He is an incredibly talented musician and a wonderful choir director. Daniel is an EfM graduate, has served on a Diocesan Liturgy Planning committee, and is married to Laura, a physician at UVA. Please join with me and the choir as we welcome Daniel and Laura into our St. Paul’s family.

A special thank you to Carol Vernon, Alf Weaver, Donna Tolson and Denise Foster for their thoughtful and diligent evaluation of all of the applicants and presenting two wonderful finalists for consideration.

“Summer Sundays” Returns June 3

Beginning June 3, Treasure Time will become the much-loved Summer Sundays where children are invited to come to church in summer casual. Throughout the summer adult and teen helpers will supervise all sorts of games, crafts, Bible stories and songs on the playground. (Inclement weather will move us indoors.)

Don’t let your children’s sleepovers deter you from coming to church on Sunday mornings…. bring sleepover friends with you. Out-of-town guests and relatives…. we welcome them too! We look forward to having lots of children attending Summer Sundays. They won’t want to miss it!

Our Playground Looks Like a Park!

We had over 90 children and adults participate in the playground spruce-up and potluck supper on Sunday, April 15. It was an awesome experience and not unlike a reality TV show—think Extreme Playground Makeovers! It was truly a wonderful afternoon and it was especially nice having Father Eric and his family—Allison, Hill, and Pailet—working alongside us. A photo collage documenting the event is on display in the parish hall.

Celebration of New Ministry June 20

On Wednesday, June 20 at 5:30 p.m., Bishop Shannon Johnston will officially institute the Rev. Eric Liles as the new rector of St. Paul’s, Ivy. The Celebration of New Ministry is a distinctive and powerful service in which the parish and its new rector celebrate the covenant they make to join together in ministry. We hope you will all plan to attend. A reception will follow.
