Psalm 55Psalm 74Jeremiah 17:5-10, 14-17Philippians 4:1-13
John 12:27-36

“While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of light”. John 12:36

I planted a huge amaryllis bulb a few weeks ago and have had much joy watching it grow. For a while nothing happened but with water and light it developed. Green appeared, first leaves then the tip of a bud. Another bud followed and 2 stems began to grow, and grow! Twenty-four inches high now and there are glorious red blooms. However, in order to grow tall and straight it had to be turned regularly as each day it leaned towards the light, as if it knew that light was its savior and necessary for its development.

What a lesson that is. Jesus brings light to our lives if we reach towards him, trust him, read his word, pray, comfort and strengthen others, feed the hungry, support those who need help. As an amaryllis grows toward the light, so Jesus will bring us out of darkness into light, illuminating our way to show us our path and helping us to become children of light.

Dear Christ, our friend and our guide
pioneer through the shadow of death.
passing through darkness to make it light,
be our companion that we may fear no evil,
and bring us to life and to glory.
