Lenten Devotional: April 12

Psalm 55; Psalm 74; Jeremiah 17:5-10;
Philippians 4:1-13
; John 12:27-36

“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? “Father, save me from this hour?” But for this purpose I have come to this hour.” John 12:27

So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you…. that you may become sons of light.” John 12:35-36

I am deeply touched by the phrase in John: “for this purpose I have come to this hour”. Embedded in this is the wisdom that there is guidance in every moment, if only I can quiet myself enough to hear. Today’s reading instructs us that we walk while we have the light. To me this means that I should take my bearings while in the light, so that I can find my way in times of darkness.

A Prayer:
Gracious Father, Son and Holy Spirit, grant me the gift of your guidance, the grace of knowing your will, and a clear path in the light so that I may set a right course as a beacon for times of darkness. Let me live my daily life in this accord, “that we may become sons [and daughters] of light.”
