“For in him every one of God’s promises is a ‘Yes.’ For this reason it is through him that we say the ‘Amen’, to the glory of God.”
2 Corinthians 1:20

Paul is saying that in Jesus, every one of God’s promises is a Yes. In today’s gospel reading, it’s hard, at first pass, to hear the Yes in Jesus’ reply to the chief priests, scribes, and elders. In today’s terms, these folks would the stalwarts of the church- priests, lay readers, chalice bearers, EFM graduates.

I don’t think Jesus’s answer strikes them as a Yes. By making them consider whether John the Baptist ministry was of God (Yes!) or not, he was also making them consider whether he and his ministry was of God (Yes!) or not. And they had already decided the answer about Jesus was emphatically NO. The reasoning they apply to their answer about John’s ministry applies equally well to their reasoning about Jesus’ ministry, and maybe mirrors our own.

God’s answer to us is always Yes. What is our reply? Is it, I don’t know; or is it Yes!

The Lord has heard my supplication; * the Lord accepts my prayer. Psalm 6:9
