Calling ALL young musicians!

This year we are taking on a much different model for children’s and youth music at St. Paul’s, with two music classes each meeting once a month on Zoom. Our focus for these sessions will not be on choral singing, but rather on theory, fun singing games, and music history. Although we will not be together each week, this could be an incredibly fulfilling and rich semester of music for all of us!

Children age 5-8 are invited to join the Children’s Music Class, and young people in 3rd grade and above are invited to join Junior Music Class. Exceptionally interested 3rd and 4th graders will be invited to join either Junior or Children’s Class, or both. Each class will meet once a month, and Junior Choristers with interest in singing will have the opportunity to take semi-private instruction with buddies on Zoom.

As we settle on the best time to Zoom on Sundays (preference may be indicated on your registration form), take a look at the class details and schedule below. Questions? Contact Director of Children’s & Youth Music, Dr. Elizabeth Joyner: elizabeth@stpaulsivy.org.

Children’s Class: Music Theory & Singing Sessions
Children’s Class (age 5-8) will meet on Zoom once a month, with music theory sessions and singing games. Since we cannot be together to develop our voices in person, I’ll be giving the children suggested activities they can do throughout the week – e.g. make up a teeth-brushing song, sing during their school breaks, and explore ways in which we encounter music in our day to day lives. These sessions will be held on September 27, October 11, and November 8.Junior Class: Music Theory & History
Junior Class (grade 3-12) will also meet once a month to learn about more advanced music theory, as well as history. While 3rd and 4th graders are more than welcome to join Children’s Class, they are also invited to give Junior Class a try this fall! Young people who are musical but who don’t particularly like to sing are also heartily invited to give this “choir” a try. Junior Class will be held on October 4 and November 1.

Buddy Sessions on Zoom for Singers
In Buddy Sessions for 3rd grade and above, choristers who would like more singing instruction may sign up for semi-private instruction in groups of 2 or 3. During these sessions we will work on sight-reading skills and build a packet of anthems and hymns suitable for recording and, eventually, for presenting in person. Buddy sessions will take place on October 18 and November 15.

Socially-Distanced Outdoor Visits
This fall, our young choirs will operate with two main objectives: to focus on music education, and to nurture community. I would love to see ALL children and youth this fall in outdoor, socially-distanced visits – to your homes, at parks, at the St. Paul’s playground – wherever we can safely gather. If you are interested in this kind of meeting, I will offer sign-ups once a month. Families who are comfortable with each other may sign up for slots with no more than 6. We will all wear masks and practice being with each other at a distance. More details to come!

December Enrichment
We will cap off our Virtual Music semester with a mini-music camp, similar to the format of our summer music camp. I will provide families with packets of material centered on listening and music history, and we will meet twice in December to learn about Advent and Christmas music in the Church.
