As we enter the Lenten season, we are called to serve in compassionate ministry to support unhoused members of our Charlottesville area community. From March 24 to March 30, St. Paul’s, Ivy will partner with People and Congregations Engaged in Ministry (PACEM) to host a women’s shelter. During this time, we will open our SPIVY doors to approximately 16 unhoused women, preparing and serving them hot dinners, providing clean, safe overnight shelter, and engaging in fellowship and interpersonal connection. We will do all of this in conjunction with the highly trained PACEM staff, who will be on site with us. To make this important ministry a success, we need volunteers for meal preparation and serving, welcome and hospitality, facility cleaning, and supply donations.
To sign up for a volunteer task, please visit our Sign-Up site here: St. Paul’s, Ivy PACEM Women’s Winter Shelter Hosting Sign-Up. On-site volunteers must be at least 16 years old and must sign the attached confidentiality agreement. (Click here to view and download this document.) Please note that members of the St. Paul’s, Ivy Women’s and Men’s Groups will receive information from your group’s leaders, who will be coordinating individual sign-ups within each group. (If you would like more information for the Women’s Group, please contact Mother AmandaorMary Heppner; for the Men’s Group, please contact Geoff Bollier or Bill Birkhofer.)
Dinner volunteers: We have divided the dinner preparation and hosting across the SPIVY Women’s Group, SPIVY Men’s Group, and the Church of our Saviour; please sign up accordingly and identify a meal “lead contact” for your evening. Dinner preparation teams may consist of the same individuals, or they may be different. We advise that you work with your small group to decide what is best. For guidelines on meal preparation and portions, please see the attached document. Importantly, we should be prepared to dine with our guests as true hosts. Please consider a simple but delicious meal that will have easy clean-up. Click here for guidelines on meal preparation and portions.
Cleaning volunteers: We will need people to sign up to clean and tidy the SPIVY spaces so our guests have clean, respectable accommodations. We have not divided these according to small groups; please sign up as you are able!
Daily key volunteers and overnight on-call volunteers: Daily key volunteers and overnight on-call volunteers: Importantly, we need a “key volunteer” on-site from 4:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. and an “overnight on-call volunteer” to be on-call each evening of hosting. Key volunteers will work directly with the PACEM staff, serving as the liaison between St. Paul’s and the shelter. The overnight on-call volunteer wil be the first point of contact for any facility issues that arise overnight.
Personal hygiene and to-go breakfast donation drop-off box: We will collect hygiene items and to-go breakfast food at St. Paul’s, Ivy, to distribute to our guests. The drop-off box will be located on the first floor of Kirklea. Please see this document for suggested donation items.
Financial contributions to the PACEM shelter: Those wishing to support SPIVY’s hosting of the PACEM women’s shelter financially can give money directly to St. Paul’s, Ivy, through our Give webpage. Indicate the amount you would like to give, and choose “Give to the Food Pantry Fund” in the dropdown menu. Once you complete the payment options, click Continue, and in the Comments, please let us know your donation is for PACEM. These donations will go directly to the cost of hygiene and food supplies for the women during their week with us.
On Sunday, March 15, at 12:00 p.m., there will be an informational meeting for PACEM shelter volunteers in Neve Hall. Heather Kellams of the PACEM staff will be with us at this meeting to answer any questions about volunteer tasks and expectations. If you are able, please attend this brief meeting after the 10:30 a.m. worship service.
This is a critical mission for our church during the Lenten season. As you reflect on the ways that you may want to extend yourself and open your heart in service during Lent, please consider supporting the PACEM shelter during its week at St. Paul’s, Ivy.
If you have any questions at all, do not hesitate to contact Emily Burrill via email or 919-923-2472.
With every good blessing,
St. Paul’s, Ivy/PACEM Shelter Coordinators Bill Birkhofer, Emily Burrill, and Mary Lane

Al‑Anon is a mutual support program for people whose lives have been affected by someone else’s drinking or addiction. By sharing common experiences and applying the Al-Anon principles, families and friends of alcoholics or addicts can bring positive changes to their situations, whether or not the loved one admits the existence of a problem or seeks help. One of Al-Anon’s basic principles is that of anonymity. Meetings are confidential, and who attendees see and what they hear stays within the confines of the meeting space and time. All are welcome.
